A snap poll has provided insight into the presidential race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump following Tuesday night's debate.
According to a CNN flash poll by SSRS, 63 percent of registered voters who watched the ABC News debate believe Harris emerged as the winner. This is nearly double the 37 percent who thought Trump performed better.
The poll indicates that Harris made a positive impression on viewers, with many feeling she connected better with their concerns. After the debate, 44 percent said Harris understands the issues facing everyday Americans, compared to 40 percent who felt Trump did.
This marks a shift from pre-debate sentiment when 43 percent believed Trump was more in touch with people's problems, while only 39 percent said the same for Harris.
Harris also saw a boost in favorability, rising to 45 percent from 39 percent before the debate. However, 44 percent of voters still viewed her unfavorably. In comparison, opinions on Trump remained largely unchanged, with 39 percent viewing him favorably and 51 percent unfavorably.
These results show a slight shift towards Harris after the debate. National polls now give her a 2.8-point lead over Trump. While Harris has been gaining in the polls since late July, Trump’s numbers have edged slightly closer in recent days.
Despite Harris’s rise in favorability, the economy remains a challenge for her campaign. The snap poll found 55 percent of voters believe Trump would handle the economy better, compared to 35 percent for Harris – a 20-point margin that widened slightly after the debate.
Most voters' intentions remained unchanged, with 82 percent saying the debate did not affect their vote. Another 14 percent said it made them reconsider but didn’t change their mind, while only 4 percent said their voting intentions shifted post-debate.
A further 14 percent said the debate made them reconsider their vote but failed to change their minds, while just 4 percent said their voting intentions had actually changed post-debate.
